We were in Cape May, New Jersey on a family vacation when my wife called my cellphone and left a voicemail while I was away from my phone.

With our 1-year old son crawling near me, I checked my voicemail. I got a big grin on my face as I heard the familiar voice of my wife say, “Happy Father’s Day” on the message.

That was seven years ago and I have still have the message saved on my phone. My favorite word is “Daddy,” and I cherish my time with my son, who will be eight in July.

According to History.com, the idea to celebrate Father’s Day was not as popular or met with as much enthusiasm as Mother’s Day. Maybe most guys are not as sentimental or sensitive.

The day to recognize fathers started July 5, 1908, when a church in West Virginia sponsored the nation’s first event. A women in Spokane, Washington helped start the first state-wide Father’s Day in 1910.

But it wasn’t until President Calvin Coolidge encouraged state governments to recognize Father’s Day that the day got traction.

In 1972, President Richard Nixon signed a proclamation making Father’s Day a federal holiday, according to History.com, which states that economists today estimate that Americans spend more than $1 billion each year on Father’s Day gifts.
