Known as “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing,” the Indianapolis 500 is among the world's best-attended single-day sporting events.

Held Memorial Day weekend, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway is one of the largest facilities to watch a sporting even with more than 250,000 permanent seats.

This year’s race begins at 12:19 p.m. (eastern) Sunday, May 27 and can be seen on TV on ABC.

Did you know

The track was built in 1909 and the first race was in 1911. Cars race around the 2.5-mile track 200 times for a total of 500 miles.

Currently 33 cars start the race in rows of three. In the past there have been as few as 21 (1916) and as many as 42 (1933).

Here are 3 odd facts

- The speedway spans 253 acres and includes a golf course. 

The track publicity department points out that Churchill Downs, Yankees Stadium, the Rose Bowl, the Roman Colosseum and Vatican City can all fit inside.

- The tradition of drinking milk after the race began in 1936 with winner Louis Meyer. 

He drank buttermilk because his mother advised him it was a good drink for a hot day. Emerson Fitipaldi drank orange juice in 1993 to promote citrus groves owned by his family.

- Race fans will consume 24,000 pounds of track fries Sunday during the race.
