My New Year's Resolutions: Fix Appliances At My House

Posted by B y Eric G. Stark on 27th Dec 2017

Can you believe 2017
is almost over?

The year went fast. My mother told me a few years ago that time seems to go faster once you have children.
She is correct. We have a 7-year-old son and I can't believe how fast the last seven years flew by.

I usually get depressed on New Year's Eve, thinking about all the things I didn't accomplish this year, the goals I didn't accomplish.

Sure, I set a goal to lose weight, but then the Pennsylvania Farm Show rolls around in the second week of January and I stray off course, eating the great food. I try again, but then there is the Super Bowl party, then Valentines Day.

Oh, what's the use?

I saw a 2016 story by CBS 3 out of Philadelphia that  according to the data from the Nielsen analytics firm, losing weight was number one on a list of 2015’s top resolutions. This was followed by finding love and saving more money.

The story noted that just days before Valentine’s Day more than a third of people have already traded in their New Year’s resolutions for a big box of chocolates.

Referring to the statistics, the Nielsen study says only 64 percent of the people last longer than the first month, and only 46 percent last longer than six months. Even more discouraging is the statistic that only 14 percent of people over 50 actually achieve their resolution compared to 39 percent of people in their 20’s.

Let's just say I'm north of 20 by a few years.

So cutting weight and saving money are not likely realistic for me.

Here is what is obtainable.

I can fix things around my home. Finally get to that "Honey Do" list my wife keeps adding to without seeing any results.

It is time to start crossing items off the list.

For a reasonable amount of money and time, I can accomplish the goals of repairing items around my house and make my wife happy. Remember the golden rule: If mamma is not happy, no one is happy.

Resolution Time

So my New Year's resolution is to fix appliances at my home.

I will starts with two surface burners. My poor wife is using just two burners on the stove. The first one blew out about a year ago. Literally blew. It exploded, actually, popping a large hole in a dish pan that was on the element.

Okay, that was just a small six-inch burner. But ...a few weeks ago I heard a boom from the kitchen, then a scream. This was followed by wife yelling my name - ERIC !!!

Maybe it is time for a new range oven, but I want to hold out. The stove is more than 30 years old and they don't make stoves as well as this one any more.

In my opinion, it is smarter and cheaper to fix the existing unit.

After all, I replaced the oven baking element ( part number WB44K10005) for $20.93 from McCombs Supply a few years ago. This element works great and was easy to install.

I watched this video for installing. It was very helpful.

So I can buy a  MP21YA and a MP15YA. The MP21YA is the 8-inch burner, while the MP15YA is the 6-inch.

Range Surface Unit Burner part number  MP15YA sells for $4.80. It is 1500 watt 230v 4 turns. The turns are how many times the coil goes around in a circle. It has a "Y" style bracket. This burner fit most ranges except GE/Hotpoint. This is a plug in type, it plugs into a plastic receptacle.

The MP21YA sells for $6.57 that is 2100 watt 230v 5 turns.

The turns are how many times the coil goes around in a circle.

It has a "Y" style bracket.

This burner fit most ranges except GE/Hotpoint.

But McCombs Supply has more than just burner elements.

They have a large selection of  pans and racks. They have after market exact fit pans and racks for almost all brands.

I may pick up the  DP2203 drip pan bowls for my household.  It includes four pans for $19.50.

DP2203

These are the replacement porcelain burner big drip bowls set for Whirlpool. The 2 small bowls (part number W10290353) and 2 large bowl (part number W10290350) are black.

Washing Machine

WIth all the new Christmas clothes that Santa and my relatives bought us, we need to make sure the washing machine is working well.

I will buy the  WH23x10030 drain pump that sells for $16.11.It is a replacement washing machine pump for General Electric.

The diameter of the bigger pipe on the pump measures 1-1/2 inch and the diameter of the smaller one measures 1-1/8 inches. Rated: 120 volts, 85 watts, 1.4 amps, 15 minute on, 45 minutes off.

While I have the washing machine apart, I plan to replace the coupling ( part number 285852AR)

 285852AR)

that is designed to fit specific Whirlpool manufactured washing machine models including Kitchenaid, Roper and some kenmores.

This coupler is made of 5-ply recycled tire rubber and it has metal inserts of the plastic. It is possibly the strongest, heaviest duty coupling on the market today. It sells for $3.99.

My last project involves my dryer. I will buy the DRYSAMKT, which includes the belt and idler pulley for Samsung dryers.

It sells for $15.25.

The belt is part number  6602-001655 and measures 92 inches in total length. It has 5 ribs and 4 grooves and is 5/16 inches wide.

The idler pulley part number is  DC96-008882C. It includes the idler pulley, arm and tri-ring.
