How Do I Replace May Bake Element?

Something didn't seem correct to Jeanie Jones.

The Akron, Ohio resident wanted to make cookies for her grandchildren before they came for a visit Friday, Sept. 22.

But there was a problem. After about 20 minutes, the oven was not heating up to the preheat temperature of 375 degrees.

After her son, Steve, did some investigating he found the problem. It was a burned out bake element. She bought a bake element ( part number CH4836) for her Whirlpool stove. The CH4836 and is a replacement for Whirlpool 308180.

CH4836

He found the problem on his first try, investigating by testing the bake element. The bake element and the broil element are the most commonly replaced parts for an electric oven that is not working, won't heat or not baking properly.

The Bake element is on the bottom of the oven. Broil elements are on the top of the oven.

Steve first looked for breaks or blistering on the element. After seeing none, he performed a continuity test. If there is continuity, there will be electricity flowing through the element. No continuity means electricity is not flowing.

MA-DMT3

You can choose from a  variety of continuity meters to see if there is continuity. Steve used the MA-DMT3 meter (sale price $25.16) and found out there was no continuity.

Other commonly replaced parts for an electric oven that is not working properly are:

Oven main  control board  or oven thermostat

GE pattented the word Genuine Calrod, we do not sell Genuine Calrod, but McCombs does sell replacement for it.

Elements begin as a straight rod then are cut and bent to length at the end of the process they are energized to the manufactures specifications of voltage and wattage.

Here is a link to McCombs Supply's full inventory of replacement oven heating elements.

This is what an element looks like when it burns out.

Installation

Buying and installing a bake element is a repair you can do yourself.

NOTE: Be sure to disconnect the electricity to your oven before doing the installation or any repairs. Also, it is

not recommended is using aluminum foil on the bottom of a oven, if the aluminum foil touches the element it will burn it up, so be careful if using foil to keep the oven bottom clean.

We recommend watching a "How to" video. Here is a video showing how to replace/install your bake element.
