Here's 3 Tips For Lowering Humidity In Your Home

Posted by By Eric G. Stark on 9th Jul 2018

I love summer, the warm days and longer stretches of daylight.

What I don't love is the humidity that accompanies summer. Humidity makes a hot day unbearable, tiring me out, draining the energy from my body.

It is bad enough dealing with humidity outside, but lately the humidity is so high that it has overtaken my home, especially my second floor, where at night it feels so hot and humid upstairs that it literally takes my breath away.

The recent heat wave and high humidity on the East coast and in Pennsylvania - beads of water condensation build on the windows in my home - led me to do some research on ways to lower to humidity in my house.

I may not be able to prevent humidity outside, but I can do something about it inside.

In addition to feeling uncomfortable, humidity can lead to other problems, like dampness on the surface of walls, musty smells and mold.

Here are 3 tips  McCombs Supply has for dealing with summer humidity in your home.

1. Install ventilation fans and make sure existing fans are working properly.

Are your bathroom vents working, or do you need to replace your bathroom vent fan? In most cases, you can replace the motor in a ventilation fan for less money than buying and installing a new fan. But McCombs can help with both items.

SM550

McCombs has a large inventory of  bathroom vent fans, like the SM550 universal bathroom vent fan ventilator motor, and bathroom vent fan assemblies, for the do-it-yourself or home improvement person who just wants to remove one assembly and easily install a new one in sort of a plug-and-play installation.

In the kitchen while cooking, make sure you are using the Kitchen's exhaust fan. Food releases moisture during cooking.

Food moisture released during cooking on your stove top contributes to humidity in your home.

Using lids during cooking and help curb moisture.

Making sure there is proper amount of air flow circulating through your attic will help with humidity (see related story on proper ventilation). McCombs sells attic fans and motors and other products to help cool your attic.

2. Check For Air Leaks
Doors, windows, entrances to the attic and electrical outlets are all common places to find air leaks.

The best way to check for air leaks to is to take a lit incense stick and move it around the areas you are checking. Move along the border of your window or door and see if you notice smoke moving from air coming through the door or window.

You can fix the leaks by using caulk or a sealant.

Some times high humidity in your home is because your air conditioner is not working properly. A good cleaning of the condenser and evaporator coils can help.

McCombs has  Vapco X-Factor for cleaning condenser and evaporator coils on your air conditioning unit.

Due to its popularity, we are currently out of stock of X-Factor, but we can order it for you.

If your AC unit is still not working well, McCombs sells condenser fan motors for air conditioning units. If it is still not functioning properly, you may need to call an HVAC and air conditioning repair person.

3. Place Indoor Plants Outside

Plants release moisture back into the air. If your goal is to keep moisture out of the home, you may need to relocate (temporarily) house plants outside.

In addition, make sure fresh cut firewood is stored away from your house. Do not have the wood pile directly outside the door of your home.

This may add to the increase in humidity in your home. When firewood dries out or cures, it releases moisture and this moisture goes into you dwelling.
